The following diagram shows the name contexts of the Active directory. Each domain has 3 name contexts; Schema, Configuration, and Domain. The Schema and Configuration name contexts are the same for the entire forest. The domain name context holds the administration objects in each domain, such as user, group and computer objects. The Global Catalog is a partial replica of all domain objects in the forest.

One server in each site should host the Global Catalog.
