Sudbury Star Oct.15, 195? - Pioneer Northern Veterinarian Dies at 86
Veteran Sudbury horse dealer and veterinary surgeon, Dr. Thomas Craig Young, 86, died this morning at Pioneer Manor, following a brief illness. The body is at Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete.
Dr. Young at 85 had the distinction of being Canada's oldest practicing veterinarian, and it was only three years ago that he retired completely from the work he loved so well. He had examined more than 100,000 horses during his long career.
"Doc" Young arrived in Sudbury to find 8,000 humans and 200 horses in the immediate area, in lumber camps and on settler's farms.
It was here that Doc Young developed and raced two of the best harness horses of their day, which was before and during the First Great War, gaining international repute for his racing in Columbus Ohio, and Dexter Park, Detroit.
Of slight stature, "Doc" Young was noted for his agility and energy even to the time of his death. He was known the length and breadth of Northern Ontario, earning his fame as a judge of horseflesh.
Twenty year ago, his right hand was smashed when he was dragged along an icy road near Skead by his dog team. He had been on his way to attend a sick horse in a bush camp when his huskies got away from him.
During the early days, he operated large stables on Larch St. and stables on the corner of King and Clinton Sts. For more than 35 years.
Evidence that the love of horses was in his blood, as a small child, is the fact that both his brothers chose the same profession.
BORN IN PONTIAC
Dr. Young was born in 1872, in the little town of Pontiac, Que., where his father, the late John Young, had a small farm. He was only 19 when he graduated in 1892 from the Toronto College of Veterinary Surgeons. Shortly after, he settled in Cobden, near Pembroke, and operated a livery barn and stables, and his own practice.
Dr. Allan McLelland, a cousin, came to Sudbury in 1908 to set up a veterinary practice, and was killed in the Spanish river Railway wreck of 1910, when the bridge over the river collapsed and 29 persons died. The lumbermen wrote Dr. Young and asked him to take his cousin's place and he came, took a look and decided Sudbury was the place for him.
Dr. Young got national attention in 1949, when he assisted in exposing a death march of horses from Rocky Island Lake to The?salon, in which 35 of 70 animals died. He examined the surviving beasts and found them beaten with clubs and wire whips, and emaciated with starvation.
His jobs over the year were legion, but most unusual of all was that of the medical advisor to two moose who were captured and broken into harness at Chelmsford a number of years ago. For two seasons they were a special attraction at the harness track there.
In recent years, Dr. Young's livery stables were gradually taken over by others, as the demand for horses declined, and machinery took the place of the animals. One phase of Dr. Young's career was over in 1945 when he sold the last of his stables on King Street, but he maintained his large practice.
He was pre-deceased by his wife, the former Mary Ann Wood, in 1945. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James Coupland (Jean) of Ottawa, and Kathleen (Kitty) Young, of Sudbury; a son Jack of Auror Gold Mines, Timmins, nine grandchildren, one great grandson, and a brother, Dr. David Young, of Durham, Ont.

James Young operated Young’s Hotel in Braeside Sand Point in McNab Township
