Levi&Herbert
Young's 1930 family tree indicates that Michael Young came to Canada with Uncle
Captn.Monk who had land near Ottawa.
Bruce
Elliott's book Irish Migrants in the
Canadas indicates that Robert Young
Greene, formerly a gentleman of Castle Connell and Modreeny, was son-in-law to Captain Monk. The 1879 Belden
Historical Atlas of County Carleton shows that Robert Young Green owned a farm (lots 21 concessions 5,6&7)
that stretched from the Ottawa River to Lake Constance close to the Monk property (lot 24 concession 7) and
to James Young (lot 19 concession 4)
The Greenes in History - From H.Walker's book Carleton
Saga
General Lloyd built a second stone house about a mile farther
south on the river which he called Noch Na Chree ("hill of my
Heart"). This he built for Robert
Young Greene when he married Mary Jane Monk, his niece, and daughter of Capt.
Benning Monk. Some of the Greene
descendants were prominent in the higher echelons of the Civil Service such as
the late Kenneth Greene, formerly Canadian Consul-General at New York and later
High Commissioner at Canberra; and, in municipal administration, such as the
late Ainslie Greene. The Greenes were
in several local enterprises but are remembered chiefly as the owneres of the
"G.B.Greene", popular Upper Ottawa river steamer. Bruce Elliott lists Lady Naomi Slater Heydon of Forrest ACT
Australia as a source of Greene family information in his book Irish Migrants in the Canadas
Most of the
following comes from a genealogy of March and Bytown Pioneers Pinhey &
Sparks published by Lady Naomi Slater Heydon.
