The Battle of Salamanca was an event in the Peninsular War that preceded the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. The diagram above and the following comments regarding the battle are from the History of the British Army by Charles Messenger.
With the two main frontier forts now in his hands, Wellington could advance into Spain, and on 22 July 1813 he fought Marmont at Salamanca and drove him back. He entered Madrid in triumph in the middle of August. Then, leaving half his army there, he moved north and besieged Burgos.
