Tilsonburg news obituary James Morrison March 27,1913 When a young man, he opened a lumber yard at Vienna Ont. Later he kept a general store in Vienna. Also he farmed a few years in Walsingham near Langton. 23 years ago he came to Tilsonburg and again engaged in the lumber business, giving it up about 6 years ago on account of his health. in all matters pertaining to business he was a man of strictest integrity. He was a member of the Methodist Church for many years and was always a faithful attendant when health & strength permitted. From Fred Gray's notes: They were 6 weeks on the way coming to Canada in a sailing ship and had a very rough trip. He was a witty Irishman who drank a lot in his early years but none during the time that I remember him. He was thrifty enough to accumulate an estate of $20,000 in his later years. He once told me that he & three generations of Morrison boys before him each had families of 7 boys & 3 girls. Grandma Morrison was a very devout methodist, uses to line up all our shoes on the back porch & shine them so that none of us could escape going to church. She was about the most unselfish person I every knew. |
John Morrison Age 37 in 1851 Elgin county Ont census Followed son James to Canada with wife and several of the younger children. settled on a farm in Bayham twp., Elgin cnty, Ont. By 1872 he was able to save up enough money to buy his own farm of 100 acres, with a mortgage of $1100 with interest at 7%. It was located on the north side of Talbot rd. Some time between 1872 & 1879 (when he got an additional $200 on his property) he learned to write. The 1st instrument is signed with his "mark" but the 2nd one bears his own signature - John Morrison. then he was required to sign again to attest to the fact that he received the $200 & here he signed "John Morris,", apparently thinking that enough was enough!! John deeded his land to his son Edward for $2500. It is not known where he is buried. seven sons & 3 daughters
